The Ottawa Outreach Initiative (OOI) gives support to those who are homeless in Ottawa. We immediately care for their needs, provide services and guidance, assist them in finding housing, involve the community, and push for policies that will improve their position in life. Our mission is to help those who are homeless in getting back on their feet and leading meaningful lives.
Homelessness in Ottawa continues to be on the rise, due to a variety of issues, aminly consisting of lack of affordable housing as well as issues with addiction and mental health. Between 2018 and 2020, the homeless population increased by 15%, especially impacting communities of colour and Indigenous peoples. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened the situation, but governments and organisations responded by increasing outreach and shelters. Despite numerous solutions, like the housing-first model, a comprehensive solution requires ongoing funding and coordination among organisations, the government, and society.
The Ottawa Outreach Initiative (OOI) was formed in 2015 by Hannah Johnson and Paul Smith because they had a passion to better the lives of homeless people in Ottawa. They wanted to help after seeing the struggles homeless people were having to face. With the help of volunteers and community members, OOI has become a powerful force that fights for good in Ottawa that is committed to helping the homeless and improving our community.
As the Executive Director of Ottawa Outreach Initiative (OOI), Hannah Johnson supervises important decisions and acts as the voice of the organization in the community. Hannah has a degree in business from University of Ottawa. As the Program Director, Paul Smith supervises the implementation of OOI's efforts and makes sure they properly serve the homeless. Paul holds a degree in Medical Science from University of Victoria. Hannah and Paul work together to accomplish OOI's goal.

Volunteers make and serve necessary and hardy meals to the homeless. Besides just providing warmth and nutrition through the colder months of the year, or refreshments and necessities during the heat, this event encourages a sense of community and friendships.
This event requires our team to work with local businesses and schools to encourage donations of jackets, hats, gloves, and scarves that were then given to families individuals who were needing to stay warm in the winter, as well as cooler option during the summer.
An organized job fair that was created specifically to address the needs of homeless people by working with local employers. To help them increase their chances of finding a job, participants had a chance to make connections with possible employers, receive resume advice, and take part in mock interviews.
